| Details: | Who was Charles T. Grawn, and why does his name still greet thousands of students more than a century after he led Central? Stop by the Grawn Hall atrium Monday, Oct. 5, for a birthday celebration honoring the building’s namesake. Pick up some saltwater taffy and a limited-edition Charles T. Grawn trading card featuring facts and advice from Central’s third president. Born Oct. 4, 1857, Grawn came to Central Normal School in 1900 and led the institution for 18 years. During his time at Central, the campus, faculty and academic programs grew significantly, and the building now known as Grawn Hall was constructed during his presidency. More than 100 years later, some of Grawn’s advice to students and young professionals sounds surprisingly familiar. He encouraged them to keep learning, communicate well, develop good habits, choose optimism and get to know other people. Come grab a piece of candy, meet the guy with the giant white mustache and learn a little more about the history behind the building you walk through every day. |
